Chlorine vs Bromine: Your Choice
Although the proper sanitizer levels of both chlorine and bromine kill bacteria and other micro-organisms, each has its own attributes.
Chlorine is available in several different forms. Bromine comes in tablets for pools and both tablets and granules for spas.
When a chlorine sanitizer is added to water, hypochlorous acid is formed. With bromine, the compound formed is hypobromous acid. These are the active, killing forms of each sanitizer. As pH increases from 7.2 to 8.0, more and more hypochlorous acid changes to a less active form. Hypobromous acid is not as affected by this pH change. To have the proper amount of the active hypochlorous acid present it is important to keep the pH of a chlorinated pool or hot tub between 7.4 and 7.6. Although brominated pools and hot tubs are not as pH dependent, it is still important to keep pH 7.4 to 7.6 for personal comfort and to protect equipment.
Both hypochlorous and hypobromous acid kill bacteria and other undesirable organisms. Here's how: All cells need certain enzymes to live. Hypochlorous and hypobromous acid move through the bacteria cells' membrane and inactivate some of these enzymes. Once this occurs, it's just a matter of milliseconds before the bacteria are dead.
Chlorine or bromine - they can both accomplish the same results. The choice is yours.
